For this people Mozilla Labs has been working on a prototype extension called New Tab Page, and although it is a very early version and you can see some interesting features.

The design is something we have to keep working, but in terms of functions, we can move the list items to taste, remove and set the number of links to display the feed from each site.

In the lower left corner we have a little icon to click if we can change the view of the page thumbnails:
There are other features, such as contextual search, which I have not seen the time to test the extension but that may be in this video demonstration.It is also interesting to see this article where he has worked on possible designs for the new tab.The idea is that simple and that behaves in an intelligent manner without the user settings.
